CONSPIRACY THEORY
There are two main conspiracy theories about the moon landing. The first theory concerns the conspiracy surrounding this event and how the government created an illusion that everyone could believe the landing was real, as NASA was determined to beat Russia to the Moon, no matter the cost.
On July 20, 1969, an estimated 530 million TV viewers watched the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin take their first steps on the moon (Little). Just a few years later, some people claimed the “giant leap for mankind” had been faked (1). Most of the proof is based on anomalies in the images transmitted back to Earth from the moon's lunar surface (1). We will analyze some of this evidence to understand why many believe in this idea.
The only things we have of this trip are photos and videos. These images are what most people point to when considering the possibility of it being a conspiracy. The astronauts had to carry a flag to the moon as a symbol of humanity's victory, a new evolutionary step, “if you look at the American flag in still pictures from the Apollo 11 mission, it appears to be flapping” (Little). But if the moon has no wind, how is that possible? There is weather on the moon or there is only empty space?
In the same picture that captured the event of the landing people noticed that in the background in space, “there are no stars in the pictures that Armstrong and Aldrin took on the moon” (1). This is quite strange if you consider that we see the stars from the earth so why is it not the same?
Also, if you look well “In images from the moon landing, it is possible to see certain objects even though they are in shadow. Skeptics argue that if the sun were the only source of light, this wouldn’t be the case. Therefore, the fact that you can see some objects in shadow must be the result of special Hollywood lighting.” (1).
“In one of the pictures from the moon landing, you can see Armstrong clearly reflected in Aldrin’s visor. Some skeptics have pointed out that Armstrong does not appear to be holding a camera, so someone else must be taking the picture” (Little). However, only the space travelers were on the expedition; there were no cameramen(1).
The last point to consider is if the landing moon is a product of Hollywood, who has directed this? And the answer is the record of Stanley Kubrick’s. The register produced “A Space Odyssey”, which came out in 1968, a year before the mission, he was able to create a realistic image of outer space (Little). “It was so compelling that some conspiracy theorists later wondered if the government had actually hired Kubrick to film the moon landing in a soundstage” (1).
The second part of this theory is the one that believes that the events happening these days are real and that the astronauts are going to the moon. That makes Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins heroes, achieving one of the greatest successes in human history. As the first theory, there is proof that deflates all the conspiracy behind it, because every is explainable by science.
If you search on the Internet the moon has weather? You can learn a lot of things about how is the largest satellite we have (NASA). The moon doesn’t have a significant atmosphere like Earth. Space weather refers to changing conditions throughout the solar system, like the varying solar wind, but at the same time, we don’t have enough information to be sure how the climate up there (1). That will be very important to forecast as humans return to the Moon (1).
It would be better to go into it if we begin discussing the photographs and how they are considered fake. For instance, the banner the astronaut brought was not a typical flag; if the astronauts had placed a standard flag on the moon, it would have remained in place, just as flags do on Earth in the absence of wind (Little), “NASA designed to put a horizontal rod inside” (Little). The Apollo 11 astronauts had difficulty fully extending the flagpole, this created a wavy effect that made the flag appear to be fluttering in the wind (1).
Since you can't see the stars in the image, it's easy to understand why if you've ever used a camera, “The surface was brightly illuminated [from the sun]. And the astronauts are wearing bright white space suits that are highly reflective.” (Little). The cameras were too short to capture the space suits and the moon’s surface while capturing the stars, which is the same thing for a normal eye if you put on focus something near the rest will be out of focus (1). The same thing is explained for the shadow. The sun is the main source of illumination on the moon. But, isn’t the only one the moon himself reflects the light from the solar body is a source of illumination too.
Another thing that goes against the conspiracy theory, is what you think about the over 400.00 scientists, engineers, technologists, and electricians, who worked on the Apollo program.
You don't have to have faith in the government, our leaders, or those in power. How can they believe that all of these people would remain silent for more than half a century?
